| The
aim of the St. Joseph Children Home (Mercy Home) is to bring
up parentless and destitute Naga tribal children, educate them
so that they become social assets rather than social liabilities.
This Children's home is located in Burma Camp near Dimapur,
Nagaland in India. |
| |
| There
are may orphans today in Nagaland and their number is growing
due to such reasons as poor health care leading to the death
of parents, ethnic violence, individualism, improverishment
and so on. |

This
home is based on a cottage system. There are 10 cotteges. Each cottege
will have children of different age group as in a natural family.
Each cottage has a 'Mother' who actually looks after the children
like a natural mother. Thus each cottage functions as a family.
The standard of living in the cottages is roughly that the lower
middle class Naga families. The youngest children (upto to age 12)
are educated at the primary school which is part of the Home. Other
children are sent to other schools, even to technical and vocational
school in the town. |
